7 Lessons From The Art Of Disappearing: Buddha's Path To Everlasting Joy (by Ajahn Brahm)

- Andrew Nolan

People might feel like disappearing in their lives for many reasons, such as feeling overwhelmed by stress, dealing with difficult relationships or situations, or feeling a sense of disconnection from themselves or others. They might feel like running away from their problems or escaping from reality. However, instead of physically disappearing, they can learn to disappear in a different way by developing the ability to let go of their attachments and desires, and finding contentment in the present moment. They can learn to find peace and joy in their lives through mindfulness, meditation and self-awareness practices. After having read the book, I've created a list of 7 lessons that can help:

  1. The art of disappearing is about letting go of attachments and desires, and finding contentment in the present moment. It is a process of letting go of the past and the future, and learning to be fully present in the here and now. In this way, we can find peace and joy in our lives, even amidst the difficulties and challenges that we may face.

  2. Cultivating a sense of mindfulness and awareness can help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and increase feelings of joy and inner peace. By becoming more aware of our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, we can learn to observe them without judgment and let them pass without getting caught up in them.

  3. The practice of meditation can be used to develop the ability to focus the mind and control our thoughts and emotions. Through meditation, we can learn to quiet the mind and still the fluctuations of our thoughts and emotions, which can help us to find inner peace and clarity.

  4. The Buddha's path to everlasting joy involves understanding the nature of suffering and how to transcend it through the development of wisdom and compassion. By understanding the causes of our suffering, we can learn to let go of the things that are causing us pain and find true happiness.

  5. It's important to practice non-attachment and non-judgement in order to truly let go of things that are causing us suffering. When we can let go of our attachment to things, we can find freedom and peace.

  6. We can learn to transform negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones through the practice of compassion and loving-kindness. By developing feelings of compassion and loving-kindness towards ourselves and others, we can learn to let go of negative thoughts and emotions and find true happiness.

  7. The ultimate goal is to attain enlightenment, which is the realization of the true nature of reality and the attainment of everlasting joy and inner peace. Through the practice of meditation and the development of wisdom and compassion, we can learn to see through the illusions of our minds and find true happiness and inner peace.

It is important to note that everyone has a choice in their life and that is where their power can be found. The lessons from the book offer guidance on how to find inner peace and joy in life, but ultimately it is up to the individual to make the choice to put in the effort and take action to improve their well-being. It's important to remember that we all have the ability to change our thoughts, emotions and reactions to the events in our lives. By making conscious choices, we can find true freedom and peace. The teachings of Buddha through the book "The Art of Disappearing" provides a roadmap for individuals to find a path to everlasting joy. It's up to the reader to take the first step and embark on this journey.
